“My dad’s family lost everything during the Great Depression, and he worked so hard to earn the money to achieve his dreams of becoming a doctor,” writes Susan Maitland, C’83, who, with her husband Alexander, made a gift to establish an annual Cornerstone Scholarship for the next four years.

“He often said, ‘Your education is the only thing no one can take from you.’ If we can make it a bit easier on someone to get a Sewanee education in honor of my parents, I am honored.” Susan Maitland, C’83, (left) learned to treasure education as a child. Today, by establishing a Cornerstone Scholarship, she and her husband, Alexander, are supporting students as they pursue a Sewanee education.
